Since Churchill College was established in the 1960s as a tribute to Sir Winston Churchill, Cowan Court, a 68-room residence hall, is the first entirely new court. It replaces the original college’s Brutalism into a cutting-edge, modern, low-energy timber structure with a cloister and three levels of square court. Untreated reclaimed wood siding mimics the original college’s original brick colour and textured board-marked concrete. Cowan Court is a brand-new structure with triple-glazed windows and a light oak interior that is energy-efficient. One of the finest examples of English Brutalism in the UK was designed by Sheppard Robson. Energy consumption is decreased by passive ventilation, triple glazing, and super insulation, while solar power, solar water heating, and rainfall collection reduce energy requirements.
