The National Museum Zurich’s enlargement, whose grand opening was July 2016, completes the museum’s original Gustav Gull-designed structure from 1898. The new wing is situated next to Platzspitz Park on the other side. In order to create a cohesive architectural and urban ensemble, the old and modern structures are joined directly to one another. Building components from the past and the present successfully clash. Some of the existing elements of the surroundings are immediately incorporated into the new building’s architecture. The layout of the building incorporates the walks and trees of the historic park, and the distinctive roofscape of the previous building establishes the volumetric concept of the new building.
